Vale Dr Neil SimmonsRadiologist

    1952-2018

South Australian born and bred, Dr Neil Simmons worked in private practice for over 35 years and performed musculoskeletal ultrasound for 29 years.

Neil commenced his career at a large country hospital, where he took his own x-rays! He was fascinated with the intellectual exercise of combining history, examination and imaging in achieving a diagnosis and he discovered musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) to be the perfect vehicle for this.  Following years of arthrography and CT arthrography, in 1989 Neil pioneered musculoskeletal ultrasound in South Australia and made it his goal to always improve in this subspecialty.  His most recent business venture with Dr Shaun Fowler allowed him to apply all his experience, not only in this subspecialty, but in room design, staff interaction and providing a top quality experience for his patients and referrers.

Neil presented at numerous national, state and regional conferences and conducted many workshops in MSKUS. He was a plenary speaker at the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) annual scientific meeting in Cairns in September 2007 and proffered 4 papers at the World Ultrasound Conference in Sydney in 2009.

He is author/co-author of 7 published papers.

He was a member of Australasian Musculoskeletal Imaging Group (AMSIG), the Australian Medical Association and South Australian Sports Medicine Association.

Neil was involved in the Caduceus exchange program in ultrasound between Denmark and Australia and was a Chris Kohlenberg travelling fellow in ultrasound, lecturing in Tasmania. His career highlights were performing MSKUS at the Sydney 2000 Olympics imaging department and participating in the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB).

He served on an advisory panel of American and international specialists creating a world-wide MSKUS credentialing examination.
