What is a CT scan and why are they important?

A Computed Tomography (CT) is an imaging procedure that uses X-rays to create detailed pictures or images. These images show organs, bones, and tissues in very fine slices often less than 1mm thick, like a loaf of bread. Each slice can be looked at individually or viewed as a whole.

CT Scans are an important aide in the diagnosis of:

• Circulatory system disease and conditions, such as atherosclerosis, aneurysm, and blood clots
• Spinal conditions
• Masses and tumours
• Kidney and bladder stones
• Inflammatory diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and sinusitis
• Injuries to head, skeletal system, and internal organs
• Gout, arthritis, and fractures of the extremities

CT Scanners are open shaped doughnut rings. Patients are positioned comfortably on the table in a variety of ways, depending on the area of imaging interest. Often, an entire CT scan can be done while the patient holds his or her breath for only one inhalation and exhalation.

Depending on why the patient is visiting for a CT scan, an injection of contrast, a special dye may be given into the arm to help display the area clearly. One of our radiographers will be available at all times during the CT scan to answer questions and ensure you are comfortable.

Once the CT scan is complete, your doctor will be sent your results to discuss with you.
